The Zeppo

This isn’t just a kickass moment. This is also a very sad moment. It’s one of the few times when we see just how emotional Xander is under the jokes and silly clothes. He is, and always has been, willing to sacrifice himself for his friends. There are also implications here that he is slightly suicidal, and this episode shows how poorly he is treated and how very low his self esteem is.

#xander had canonically abusive parents#as problematic as his character is never forget that#it explains a lot of his behavior and it’s fucking important to remember#his parents were at the very least neglectful#in ‘restless’ implied to be outright physically abusive#never. fucking. forget that.#never forget how much xander’s home life sucked#to the point where he was willing to sleep outside the house in a sleeping bag while it snowed on /christmas/#never forget that. (the-elusive-ollie)

#the thing about xander for me #is that he grows up #i will never argue that he doesn’t do some shitty things in the earlier seasons #he acts in a really gross way at times and is incredibly immature and does selfish things #but he G R O W S  U P #by the end of the series he’s one of the most stable and responsible scoobies #who has become the emotional stability of the team #and who actively goes out to other people to make sure they’re okay #and that is SO IMPORTANT TO ME #saying that xander is an irredeemable piece of shit for something he did when he was 16 #is too similar to me to saying ‘people can never grow up; people can never learn better’ #people CAN AND DO GROW UP AND LEARN TO BE BETTER #people can change #xander harris changes so dramatically throughout the series #but it’s so subtle at times it’s hard to miss because he’s still him #and i love him for it #all of my btvs feelings 

If you’re just getting into Buffy and Xander puts you off, let me refer you to these tags. He does get better. I may not be a huge fan of the latter seasons, but I do appreciate that the characters get a lot of development during 6 and 7.
